About MSW

Money Smart Week began as a coordinated effort to promote financial literacy in the Chicago area in 2001. The initiative, now a national annual event held during Financial Literacy Month (April), includes local programming events throughout the country. DeKalb County began a collaborative in 2010 as a way to combine and grow financial wellness efforts in the surrounding community. Local programming has grown recently to include LaSalle and Lee Counties.

Mission: Money Smart Week helps consumers manage their personal finances better.
Programs are available without cost for all age groups and income levels, covering many facets of personal finance.

The goal of the initiative is to provide resources and programming to increase financial wellness, to streamline support efforts, and to strengthen our combined impact on our students, schools and community.

The Initiative:

  • brings together partners to deliver programs and presentations to classrooms, parents, educators, business groups, and the general public.
  • helps to prepare college students to make informed decisions that will improve their financial situations.
  • works to teach educators about the importance of incorporating economic education and financial literacy programs into their classrooms.
  • educates the local community on topics and resources to help them better understand the importance of financial wellness.

The Steering Committee for Money Smart Week DeKalb, LaSalle, & Lee Counties directs local programming and resources. Programming requests are appreciated! If you have a topic suggestion, please Contact Us (
