Eligibility and Timelines

Middle School Competition

The Middle School Personal Finance Challenge is an online competition where student teachers test their knowledge of consumer concepts and personal finance skills.  To participate, teachers fill out an initial online registration between January 1 and March 31.

Once registration is received and confirmed, an email will be sent on how to form student teams. All members of a team of students must be currently enrolled in the same public, private, or home-based school with a teacher or parent serving as an advisor/facilitator. Students may also participate in the competition as part of a school or after-school club, if provided support by an educator, administrator, or parent advisor.

Teachers may engage their students in taking the online test at any time within the Financial Literacy Month (April) participation window. There are no fees and teachers may engage as many students as desired. Individual test scores are provided to teachers after their students’ testing is complete.

High School Competition

The Illinois Personal Finance Challenge (IPFC) is initially an online test competition. The IPFC competition provides an individual test score for each student, making it a great assessment tool on student understanding and application of economic & financial literacy concepts.  This is true whether content is taught in a traditional classroom setting or through ISBE preferred inquiry-based activities.

Following online registration between January 1 - February 22, teachers only need to download, complete, and submit a Teacher Registration Form to Econ Illinois by February 27. Once registration is confirmed, an email will be sent on how to form student teams.

Teachers may engage as many students as desired, but all students must be currently enrolled in the same public, private, home-based high school or after-school club with a teacher or parent serving as an advisor. The competition takes place during the spring semester and there are no participation fees. Teachers are not limited by location or budget!
