Middle School

The Middle School Personal Finance Challenge is an online competition where student teachers test their knowledge of consumer concepts and personal finance Skills.  To participate, teachers fill out an initial online registration between January 1 and March 31.  The online competition takes place during Financial Literacy Month in April.  There are no participation fees and teachers may engage as many students as desired.

Once registration is received and confirmed, an email will be sent on how to form student teams. All members of a team of students must be currently enrolled in the same public, private, or home-based school.

High School Competition Rules

The Personal Finance Challenge is an online competition where student teams test their knowledge of consumer concepts and personal finance skills. To participate, teachers register online between January 1 - February 24. An Illinois registration form for the teacher and each student must also be completed and submitted to Econ Illinois.  The Illinois forms require parental signature for students, regardless of age, and need to be submitted to Econ Illinois by February 27.

Teachers nay engage as many students as desired, but all students must be currently enrolled in the same public, private, or home-based high school. The competition takes place during the spring semester. There are no participation fees and teachers are not limited by location or budget.

Once registration is confirmed, an email will be sent on how to form student teams online. All high school students, regardless of courses taken, may participate in the Personal Finance Challenge. However, teachers of the following courses will be most interested in utilizing the competition with their students:

  • Business
  • Career & Technical Education
  • Economics
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Family & Consumer Science
  • Personal Finance

Online winners announced: These teams compete in the Illinois Personal Finance Challenge state championship in Chicago

March 31, 2017

Deadline for teachers to submit confirmation of student teams (including any reconstituted team members) attending the State Finals

April 25, 2017

The Personal Finance Challenge State Finals for ten finalist teams held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago

May 5, 2017

The National Personal Finance Challenge competition will be held in Kansas City, MO for all first place teams from participating state
