2018 Illinois Personal Finance Challenge

Award Winners

Illinois State Championship

West Chicago Community High School earned First Place in the Illinois Personal Finance Challenge State Finals, a program of Econ Illinois! The event, held April 25 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, involved 39 high school students competing for the Championship title.

West Chicago outscored Naperville Central High School during the final "Quiz Bowl" round of competition. The First Place team, coached by teacher Candace Fikis received a trophy and framed certificate for their school, individual medals and certificates as well as a cash award for travel to Nationals. The event consisted of individual and team written tests and the final quiz bowl round of competition. This year, student teams were also involved with a Critical Thinking activity that addressed insurance coverage and risk in the aftermath of an auto accident. Students took on the role of advising the ticketed individual how to cover expenses incurred in the accident, as well as advice on better protection of financial assets moving forward. Many thanks to COUNTRY Financial for the topic and support in creating this prompt!

The West Chicago team advanced to the National Finals competition held May 9 in Nebraska. Each First Place state team qualifies to represent their state in the National Finals, which will consist of an in-depth Case Study presented to a series of multiple judges during the event. West Chicago represented Illinois for the National competition last year as well.

The Naperville Central High School team scored ahead of all nine competing student teams to qualify for the Quiz Bowl, earning a close Second Place in the final round of the State Finals. The Naperville team, represented by teacher C. David Ashton, received a trophy and framed certificate for their school, individual medals and certificates as well as a cash award.
