Rules and Timelines

The Econ Challenge is an online competition where student teams test their knowledge of economics. To participate, teachers can register onlineOpens in New Window between Jan. 1-Feb. 24. The competition takes place during the spring semester. There are no participation fees and teachers are not limited by location or budget.

Following registration, teachers must download and submit Student Registration forms for each student and a Team Coach Registration form for each teacher coach. Once registration is confirmed, an email will be sent on how to form student teams.

The Illinois Economics Challenge competition is open to students at an advanced placement level. Each team of students must be currently enrolled in or have previously taken Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, honors, two-semester, or any other advanced courses in economics (including courses where students earn college credit). A secondary teacher must teach all qualifying courses listed. 

Is there a competition for consumer education, one-semester economics or personal finance students?

All high school students, regardless of courses taken, may participate in the Personal Finance Challenge. However, teachers of the following courses will be most interested in participating:

  • Business
  • Career & Technical Education
  • Economics
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Family & Consumer Science
  • Personal Finance

January 2017
ONLINE! registration opens.

February 24, 2017
Initial ILEC online registration closes.

February 27, 2017
Teacher & student registration forms due in Econ Illinois office via email, fax, or mail.

March 7- noon March 23, 2017
Online competition held.

April 7, 2017
IL Economics Challenge State Finals for ten finalist teams held in DeKalb, IL.

April 25, 2017
The National Semi-final Economics Challenge competition.

May 20-22, 2017
National Finals for Economics Challenge held in New York City.
