Rules and Timelines

The Econ Challenge is an online competition where student teams test their knowledge of economics. To participate, teachers can register onlineOpens in New Window between Jan. 1-Feb. 24. The competition takes place during the spring semester. There are no participation fees and teachers are not limited by location or budget.

Easier registration! Following online registration, teachers only need to download, complete, and submit a ILEC Teacher Registration Form to Econ Illinois. Once registration is confirmed, an email will be sent on how to form student teams.

The Illinois Economics Challenge competition is open to students at an advanced placement level. Each team of students must be currently enrolled in or have previously taken Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, honors, two-semester, or any other advanced courses in economics (including courses where students earn college credit). A secondary teacher must teach all qualifying courses listed. 

Is there a competition for consumer education, one-semester economics or personal finance students?

All high school students, regardless of courses taken, may participate in the Personal Finance Challenge. However, teachers of the following courses will be most interested in participating:

  • Business
  • Career & Technical Education
  • Economics
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Family & Consumer Science
  • Personal Finance

Economics Challenge Timeline

January 2018
ONLINE! registration opens.

February 23, 2018
Initial ILEC online registration closes.

February 27, 2018
Teacher & student registration forms due in Econ Illinois office via email, fax, or mail.

March 12- noon March 22, 2018
Online competition held.

April 3, 2018*
Deadline for teachers to submit confirmation of student teams (including any reconstituted team members) as well as student permission forms and media release forms, signed by a parent, before advancing to State Finals.

April 13, 2018
IL Economics Challenge State Finals for ten finalist teams held in Chicago, IL.

April 24, 2018
The National Semi-final Economics Challenge competition.

May 19-21, 2018
National Finals for Economics Challenge held in New York City.

*May fall during Spring Breaks – important to plan for meeting deadline!
