Illinois Economic Challenge State Championship

Homewood Flossmoor High School earned First Place in the 2015 Illinois Economics Challenge State Finals, a program of Econ Illinois! The event, held April 16 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, involved 40 high school students competing for the Championship title.

Homewood Flossmoor outscored Second Place St. Ignatius College Prep, after an extremely close final “Quiz Bowl” round of competition. The First Place team, Michael Gislason, Aleks LaTurner, Evan Runburg, Robert Swetz and teacher Nick Anello received a trophy and framed certificate for their school, individual medals and certificates as well as Visa gift cards. The championship event consisted of individual and team written tests and the final quiz bowl round of competition.

1st place Homewood-Flossmoor team with Coach, Mr. Anello

The Homewood Flossmoor team advanced to the National Semi-Finals round of competition held as a proctored test immediately following the State Finals event. The on-site proctored test is available for each 1st Place state team attempting to advance to the National Finals competition. The top scoring AP Economics teams from only four states qualified for the 2015 National Economics Challenge held in New York City on May 18, which also culminated in a final “Quiz Bowl” round.  Over 10,500 students from 41 states participated in the Economics Challenge this year with the HF team scoring 15th in the National Semi-finals overall.

2nd place St Ignatius with Coach, Mr. Owens

The St. Ignatius team pulled ahead of eight competing student teams to earn Second Place in the final round of the competition. The Second Place team, Spencer Hooper, Ian Klatzco, Henry Rigsbee, and Isaac Wink and their teacher Jim Owens received a trophy and framed certificate for their school, individual medals and certificates as well as Visa gift cards.

Illinois participants in Economics Challenge ONLINE! 2015

Teams from the following schools competed online for the 2015 Economics Challenge. Twenty teachers engaged their students in the online competition. An asterisk (*) indicates teams at that school having advanced to the state finals competition. Two asterisks (**) indicate that school had multiple teams qualify for the state competition. All schools participating receive a certificate of recognition.
